Settled cozily in Sinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Takeko Amano rendered a peaceful concerto for her unborn son, Yujin. On October second, of 1983, he entered the world to start his life and his own musical journey. Later, he would observe his mother as his biggest influence... "She puts her spirit into the cello to make sounds. It is beautiful", he explains.
At age fifteen, Yujin made a heedless discovery that would launch him onto his own musical odyssey. He was relaxing by the television, watching MTV, when a new music video came on for the song "Hole in My Soul", by Aerosmith. Joe Perry propelled into one of his epic rock guitar solos, and Yujin claims, "At that moment, I knew that's what I had to do".
His first guitar was a Yamaha acoustic, on which he began to teach himself to play along with records encompassing those of Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Jeff Beck. Subsequently, he began studying the guitar with Tomo Yamaguchi. With a good grasp on the fundamentals, and an ambition to come to America and chase his dream, Yujin made a brave decision.
At the age of 18, he got on a plane and made the long trip halfway around the world to Boston, Massachusetts. He enrolled in the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he studied with players such as Joe Musella, Jim Kelly, David Tronzo, and Thaddeus Hogarth. He started playing with the abundance of musicians within the college and joined his first rock band.
As Yujin honed his chops, he quickly built his reputation and found himself in high demand. He now plays in many groups including Blacksole (Urban Music Award nominees), the Jeannine Hebb Band, and the Caitlin Rodgers' trio. He has played at many clubs around Boston such as TT the Bear's Place, Harper's Ferry, the Middle East, and the Paradise Rock Club.
"Yujin is great to play with. He always comes in with just what I want to hear and I am always learning from him." - Caitlin Rodgers
"Yujin is always well prepared and brings extreme musicianship and technique in a very selfless manner. His lack of ego creates a very pleasant playing experience, and he is always willing to listen to others." - Rick Considine (Berklee Professor, drummer)
"Yujin is an amazing musician and person who is a versatile player. He is great at playing solos and always knows what to do to compliment a singer. " - Jeannine Hebb
Currently, Yujin Amano has plans to move to New York City to pursue to the Yujin Amano Project, a group for which he composes music and plays with various musicians. He will also continue to play with the Jeannine Hebb Band and the Caitlin Rodgers trio. With influences ranging from classical to blues, Yujin is proficient in nearly all styles including jazz, rock/pop, blues, and R&B. You might find Mike Stern, Dannii and Kylie Minogue, Scott Henderson, Aerosmith, Jeff Beck, and Led Zeppelin rotating in his CD player.
"Seek this guy out. Hear him play, or better yet, play with him!" - Caitlin Rodgers
